Cycling is not something restricted to the Tour de France, or the Olympic Games. In fact, there are a multitude of thrilling bicycle routes all across the world that should be sampled. One of the most iconic of these is the Trans Dinarica, a stunning cycling route that connects Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and several other countries together.
Taking in some of the most gorgeous and breathtaking scenery, this is a 1200-mile bike trail giving you the perfect avenue to explore some of the most far-flung places in Europe and enjoy the pursuit of cycling at the same time. Covering a combination of surfaces, and some widely diverse landscapes, this is one of the best ways of exploring the world and enjoying your passion at the same time.
Starting out in Soča Valley in Slovenia, close to the border of Italy, the route heads along the Adriatic coast of Croatia and ending in Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo. However, the big appeal of this route is the fact that it allows you to visit all 8 countries in the Balkans – the other being Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, and Kosovo.
Creating the Route
The idea for the route began back in 2016 when tour operators teamed up to create the ultimate Western Balkans biking experience. The incredible Trans Dinarica takes riders through a combination of amazing surfaces and landscapes, including sea ridgelines, mountain passes, rivers, forests & woodland, lakeside paths, and picture perfect towns. The route is said to have been inspired by the Via Dinarica hiking trail that covers over 1,000 miles and runs through the same 8 countries. Luggage transfers are also available at different checkpoints along the route.
What better way of being able to flex your cycling muscles, expand your horizons, and keep active than traveling some of the best UNESCO Heritage Sites in the whole of Europe. The idea behind the route is that cyclists can travel 30-40 miles each day, along any manner of paths or routes. This presents so many amazing opportunities for taking photographs, enjoying the peaceful wilderness, and losing yourself in nature.
And the route doesn’t just offer amazing scenery and the backdrop of some truly remarkable and historically significant countries, it also allows you to experience some wonderful cultural experiences too. Riding through some of the most amazing towns and backwater villages, there are open roads, Ottoman-era architectural wonders, farmhouses, cobbled streets, friendly communities, and many, many more. You have so many wonderful experiences for exploring the great outdoors and making the most of your trip.
If you are a cycling nut, and you have an interest in getting out and exploring the Balkans, this is one of the most remarkable journeys to discover. The Trans Dinarica is one of the most sensational and life-changing cycling routes in the world, and a must-visit for anyone with an interest in travel and cycling. Exploration, interaction, and a sharing of cultures looms large as you get to experience new things on this wonderful journey.
