One of the things that many people expect on an evening out is to have good service, but it’s also good to be respectful of your waiter. One pregnant waitress seemed to come across a couple of difficult customers who felt they should leave her an upsetting message.
Receiving a message
Anyone who has worked in the service industry knows that it’s no walk in the park, even if you’re incredibly skilled at what you do, it’s still a tough job to do.
However, one waitress loved her job, and she always put in as much as she could, remaining positive for her customers. She knew the value of a great night out.
Working through it
Ashley Lynn lives in the U.S and earns her living working as a waitress. It’s a job that means she is on her feet all day no matter what. It would usually be tiring by the end, but she was also now working through her pregnancy.
In fact, she was extremely far along and continued to work even though she was eight months pregnant. It wouldn’t have been tough for anyone to see the condition she was in.
A particular couple of people
Ashley had been serving a mother and a daughter for the evening, not the kind of combination that would typically be a problem. In fact, she had no idea that anything had gone amiss at all until the mother and daughter had paid and left.
Ashley knew she had been polite to them all evening, she had been in a very positive mood, and made sure their evening ran smoothly. That was everything customers wanted from their server, right?
Finding the note
It was one of her final shifts before Ashley was going to go on maternity leave. She usually loved her job, but the note she found was bringing her time there to an end in a distressing way. The two had gone now, leaving behind their negative message.
One of her colleagues saw just how badly it was affecting her and how upset she had become because of how nasty the message was. The same colleague encouraged Ashley to share a picture of the message on social media.
The message they left
Where there would typically be a tip left for Ashley, there was a horrible message left by the mother and daughter. Although there was no knowing which one came up with it, the message was so cruel it had Ashley in tears.
The message read ‘May you have a very long labor, good luck sweets.’ As if that wasn’t bad enough, to emphasize their point, they underlined ‘long’ just to make the message even more upsetting for the waitress.
Their denied request
Ashley had to work out why they had left such an upsetting message, and it must have boiled down to one thing in particular. The mother and the daughter had both wanted to order a round of drinks, only there was one problem.
Ashley had to make sure she was compliant with the law when it comes to drinking, and it seems that the women weren’t pleased when Ashley asked about the daughter’s age. She asked if she could see some age identification.
Sticking to the rules
Seemingly, the mother and daughter were not pleased with being asked this question. Unfortunately, it’s not one that Ashley could avoid, she had to make sure she asked about someone’s age before providing a drink; otherwise, she could lose her job.
It could also mean that the restaurant loses its license. Keeping compliant with the law is essential for anyone serving drinks, but apparently, the women were angry with this question. They were so upset that they felt they should plan to leave a message.
Sharing it around
At the suggestion of her colleague, Ashley shared the note she received on social media. She was sharing it so that other friends of hers could see it, but had no idea that it was going to be shared and read by thousands of people.
She and her colleague could never have imagined it would go that far, but it was being read and shared by people who understood Ashley’s position. Many other workers backed the heavily pregnant woman and even shared their own stories.
The view of an insider
It was an eye-opener to many people who had no idea that some customers could be so upsetting. Most people believed that customers were generally happy and polite to servers, especially when they were doing everything as they expect.
Since sending the note around, she actually highlighted many issues, and many of her customers really felt for Ashley. In fact, they have now become some close friends of hers since it all happened.
Unable to comprehend it all
Ashley shared that she very rarely had any issues with customers. In fact, almost all of the time, her customers were lovely and pleasant. She admitted that she was utterly lost for words when she saw the note; something that very rarely happens.
However, despite these two women’s cruelty, Ashley has decided the situation is better off left in the past and wishes the two women happiness. After all, everyone is just trying to get by.
Many people decided to weigh in with their support online. One user made the valid point that, if you’re a young adult and you know you’re going to be IDed, then it should be on you at all times.
After all, if you feel as if you’re responsible enough to drink at a restaurant, then you should be responsible enough to ensure you have your ID on you. If you don’t, then you should be prepared not to be served.
Some people actually took a far darker approach to how Ashley should have dealt with the situation. One person even suggested that Ashley should have ‘accidentally’ overcharged her card so that she had no choice but to pay a tip.
That way, if she later realized, then she would have to call the restaurant to explain what the problem was, and why she chose not to leave a tip. However, it was no good reason to break the law, even if the woman was exceptionally unkind.
Filled out incorrectly
Another person pointed out something other people had missed. It seems as if the woman had actually filled out the check totally incorrectly, which could have ended in a penalty charge anyway.
Instead of writing in the total of the bill in the right section, in her rush to insult Ashley, she incorrectly put in ‘0’, and in the signature section, she wrongly wrote in the total of the bill. Some places automatically charge twenty percent if this is the case.
Relating to the problem
Many people sometimes forget their identification, it’s a human mistake and will happen from time to time. However, someone explained that they once forgot their ID when they had wanted a drink at a restaurant, and they weren’t allowed to.
However, they didn’t then blame the server for their mistake. In fact, they think you would have to be crazy if you would ever dream of blaming someone else for that. Unfortunately, these two women didn’t seem to agree.
The problem with ID
Other people also shared their experiences when it came to being asked for ID. One lady related that, when she was asked for ID, she was thanked not for getting angry or upset as a result of the question.
They noted how being asked for ID is simply a part of these people’s jobs and not some kind of targeted issue. Being asked for ID doesn’t take long to sort, it only takes a few seconds to show the age confirmation before being given an adult drink.
Better safe than sorry
It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to letting young people have a drink. This server was only doing what she had to do. People even praised her for keeping her cool and standing her ground even though she was being given a hard time.
In fact, to make sure that businesses are being compliant, often the police send in someone undercover to establishments to check that they’re in keeping with the law.
Words aren’t enough
Unfortunately, there are so many stories of people who don’t want to show their ID. One person even explained how he had someone exclaim the year they were born as if that should be proof enough.
This customer actually had their ID in the parking lot, they just didn’t want to get up to get it. Unfortunately, if you have been asked to produce your ID, then words aren’t enough. This person could have remembered their ID and had no problems at all.
Notes in common
Someone else then explained their own experience with a note. The people had already left their table before they knew something was wrong. The new customers who were going to sit at the table apparently found the receipt with a note.
Apparently, the previous customers wanted to tip, but because the servers didn’t go and collect their refills quickly enough, the former customers felt they didn’t deserve to be given a tip. Sometimes there is no pleasing some people.
A busy night
One server had a particularly busy night and was getting ready to serve a large family who also felt the need to leave a note before they exited the restaurant. The family included five children, one woman, and two men.
The server made sure the family knew that they were already swamped working on orders and that there might be a wait, especially as so many orders had something changed or switched to make it more complicated for the chef to do.
The problems began
The server made sure that the family had enough drinks to tide them over while they were waiting for their food. The server had no idea it was all about to get troublesome, especially once they started bringing the food out.
The group was annoyed that the server had forgotten their ranch dressing. It was a simple enough thing to forget, and all they needed was a polite reminder. The server went over and got the sauce for them and made sure their drinks were filled. It seems there was more.
They left a note
The server explained how everyone except the eldest child had been extremely messy, leaving everything to be sorted and cleaned much more than necessary. They all got up to pay, except the woman who remained behind to leave a note.
Of course, the temptation to go straight up and see what she was doing was high, but the server wouldn’t have to wait very long before finding out what the woman had written on the note.
Unfortunately, it seemed as if the woman had nothing nice to say about the service she had received and left a list of things she felt the server could have done better. She thought that the service was less than exceptional.
She didn’t feel as if the server checked on the table enough, took their plates on time, and seemed to forget a bunch of items they had asked for. The note left the server feeling upset and miserable and tried making sure other tables didn’t feel the same.
It seems that Ashley got a seriously bad reaction for such a simple question. The response seemed too strong, with such a harsh message, all because Ashley was doing her job and asking someone who looked too young for her ID.
The note then got personal and wished Ashley a very long labor. It just seems an incredibly mean thing to say to someone at all. Arguably, it’s not something that should ever be wished upon someone.
Nothing but happiness
Despite such a heartbreaking note, Ashley kept the moral high ground. Considering how much the note upset her, Ashley did an excellent job making sure that she didn’t retaliate, despite many people feeling she would be totally justified.
Ashley made sure she didn’t stoop to the level of the woman who had left the note. She could have felt compelled to reveal the woman’s identity, but she kept it a secret and didn’t even disclose the name of the restaurant.
Was she in the wrong?
Of course, there is no doubt that the hurtful note was totally uncalled for, but besides that, the woman hadn’t done anything particularly wrong. She might have filled out her check incorrectly, but she’s not actually bound by law to give a gratuity.
However, they make a massive difference. Some people pointed out that servers who work in New Jersey only earn $2.14 per hour. So while it’s not mandatory, servers often rely on tips to live.
A terrible surprise
The customer probably got quite the shock when she realized her note was doing the rounds. Of course, she probably had no idea that her note was going to make the rounds on the internet, and would certainly not be a positive reflection on this customer’s behavior.
Ashley didn’t need to name and shame her to getting back at this customer, since the note even went as far as Australia. No doubt she was mortified seeing it.
An awful goodbye
It was Ashley’s penultimate shift at the restaurant, and it was not the kind of memory she wanted to take with her into her maternity leave. Ashley had chosen to stay at the job up until she was eight and a half months pregnant, so she clearly loved it.
It wasn’t what Ashley had expected, not especially since most of the time, she always had pleasant and complimentary customers to serve. It would be one of her last memories at the job.
Looking on the positive side
In many ways, Ashley’s colleague was right to urge her to share the story. After all, we all need a little reminding to be kinder and more considerate of our fellow human beings. It’s certainly important that people know that it’s unacceptable to leave notes like the one Ashley received.
Considering labor is a nerve-wracking thing for almost every woman, not to mention notoriously painful, to wish a long labor on someone is an extremely hurtful thing to say. This should remind people of the consequences of their actions.
A different pregnant waitress
Another pregnant woman who was working as a waitress was Courtney English. She also only had a few weeks left until she was due to give birth. Pregnant women are often told to keep off their feet in the later stages, however Courtney had to keep going to earn much-needed money.
It was a tiring job, but she was working alongside some great colleagues who were eager to help her out. They made sure she didn’t have to carry anything too heavy and let her serve sections closer to the kitchen.
In came an officer
Courtney was working to save money up for her first baby. She knew it was expensive looking after a child, so she made sure that she saved every penny she could. She also loved the part of her job where she interacted with the customers.
However, one day, a police officer she had never seen before walked in. While she was used to serving regulars, she would serve this officer with a smile like everyone else, and she took his order of a salad and water.
He also left a note
The officer ate his small meal and paid for it at the counter before leaving. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Later on, when Courtney checked in on his table, she saw that he had written a message saying ‘Enjoy your first, you will never forget it.’
To top it all off, he had also left her a whopping $100 tip despite his meal only coming to $8.75. He had seemingly overheard the waitress saying how excited she was for her baby.
Super kind message
It seemed too good to be true, so Courtney wanted to make sure it wasn’t a mistake. She checked with her boss, and it was confirmed as true.
This act of kindness was enough to bring Courtney to tears, she was so happy and pleased with this unexpected gift. She explained what a wonderful feeling it was. She shared her story, prompting thousands of other people to share it, to. They tracked the officer down, but he wished to remain a kind stranger.
Courtney had seriously been struggling to save money in the months of her pregnancy, and considering she was so close to giving birth, the gift was a welcome one. It was totally unexpected, she couldn’t believe her luck or the kindness of a stranger.
She knew there was so much she was going to have to buy for her new baby, so she was utterly beside herself with happiness. Safe to say, everyone else was too.
Thanking a stranger
Courtney’s father even wanted to thank the officer. He was so grateful about what he had done for his daughter, knowing he didn’t have to do it at all. He was also unaware of the officer’s identity, so he had to settle for a social media post.
He claimed that there may be a few ‘bad apples’ in the police force, however, most police officers are wonderful and courageous members and deserve to be recognized for their good deeds.
He made his little girl cry
Brian, Courtney’s father, continued in the message saying that the officer had made his little girl cry, but that he had also made her year. He explained just how much respect he has for people in the same profession, and how the officer was more than that, he was a beautiful human being.
It’s safe to say that a little goes a long way, or in the case of this officer, a lot. They were more than overwhelmed by someone’s kindness; much better than a negative message left for someone.
It works both ways
It’s not just customers who leave nice or nasty notes for their servers – waiters and waitresses also get to reciprocate that. One waitress was serving two firefighters who had just gotten off of a 12-hour shift. They stopped off at the diner, totally exhausted.
Liz Woodward was waiting on them that morning and overheard their conversation about extinguishing a fire in a warehouse. It can seem strange to many people who don’t risk their lives every day.
Liz couldn’t help listening in on the men’s conversation and figured she couldn’t let it go unnoticed. She decided it was high time someone gave something to these guys and if she could give a little happiness and gratitude to these guys.
She decided that she was going to pay for their meal, leaving them a lovely note as well. She described them as ‘courageous, brave, and strong,’ and even drew a few pictures on there to illustrate.
Paying it forward
These firemen were grateful to the waitress who’d shown them this act of kindness. This show of kindness was enough to make these firefighters want to do a little something for Liz too. They looked her up and checked out her situation.
They came across a donations page set up by Liz for her father, who has no use of his arms and legs. She was trying to raise money for a wheelchair accessible vehicle for him. He’s missed every family event because they don’t have the means of transportation.
Making it go viral
The firefighters worked their magic, sharing, and getting in contact with everyone they knew. Within days, the donations had racked up to $70K, when the total was only $17K, to begin with. Liz hadn’t been kind to receive anything in return but was emotional to discover the impact of her and the firefighters’ actions.
This has shown Liz and the firefighters how one small act of kindness can really make a difference to someone’s life, and it made all the difference to Liz and her father.
It’s not all doom and gloom
Ashley may have had a hard time with a customer, who left her a bewilderingly awful note. Thankfully, not everyone is like that, and people out there really can come together to bring happiness to others. While some might feel the need to express their negative opinions, others will want to do something kind.
It’s not every day, either of these sorts of things happens, which is why people find them so fascinating. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear more stories like Liz’s than upsetting situations such as Ashley’s?
