Take a good look at this old magazine advertisement. In it, they recommend burning you old zinc batteries and they even give you a couple good reasons to do so, too.
First, they say it’s totally safe. Then they say it can help clear out the soot in your chimney. Finally, they promise you a pretty show of colors. Well, guess what? Those zinc batteries also give off toxic fumes, which can be extremely dangerous to anyone who happens to breathe them. That’s a huge “oops” right there.
