The hallmark of a truly great adlibbed moment is one where the audience can’t even tell if what they’re seeing on the screen was scripted or not. A prime example of this came in Black Panther, when a delegation led by T’Challa’s mother Ramonda attempts to enlist the aid of M’Baku, leader of the Jabari tribe.
When CIA agent Everett Ross tries to intervene, M’Baku cuts him off by grunting like an animal. The movie’s director Ryan Coogler revealed it was the perfect ad-lib – an animalistic yet offhanded dismissal of Ross and anything he has to say.
