If Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson is to be believed, one of Avengers: Endgame’s most pivotal moments was made up on the fly. Just before Tony Stark does the unthinkable and sacrifices himself by wielding the Infinity Stone himself, he looks to Strange.
The Sorcerer Supreme doesn’t say anything, but just lifts up a single finger. Whether he’s referencing their one-in-14-million odds or saying this was Tony’s one chance to beat Thanos is up for debate, but whatever the case, Derrickson says Benedict Cumberbatch himself told him the gesture was ad-libbed.
