When Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Joker, it was more than well-deserved. Such a visceral, raw showing had to come from somewhere much deeper than words on a script’s page. Well, it did.
Phoenix blazed his own trail multiple times, most notably after Arther Fleck takes a life for the first time. The script called for him to talk to himself in a mirror and question his actions. Phoenix decided to do an upsetting little dance instead, and there was so much truth to it that director Todd Philips decided to keep it.
